It's not just a game. It's a BATTLE!

Flag Football is gearing up for season #1

Alamo City Battle and San Antonio Flag Football Association have combined on a joint project to bring flag football to the women of San Antonio and South Central Texas.

Our pro season was halted due to not being able to secure a local football stadium lease in time to make the WPFL deadline, so the Alamo City Battle has focused its immediate attention to one of several integral parts of the puzzle to make women's professional football a viable sport entertainment venue in San Antonio, Texas like it is on the west coast, east coast and even in Houston Texas where the Houston Energy has made its mark with back to back championships in the Women's Professional Football League. The most pressing need at this moment for the Alamo City Battle is women's flag football teams/league.

One of the Alamo City Battle's goals is to spotlight the open doors that exist for women to play football at all levels and to help develop a way for them to participate at each level of football where the door isn't already fully opened. Flag Football hasn't been easily accessible to women in San Antonio and South Central Texas up until now. There were a few outlets in high school and college, however, women ages 18 and older will now be able to participate in a league custom made just for them.

Instead of creating a new league from scratch, Alamo City Battle GM Larry Cothran and San Antonio Flag Football Association Director Andy Gonzalez combined on a joint venture to start a women's league within the SAFFA's very successful men's non-contact flag football leagues. SAFFA has been running flag football leagues since 1983 and they are the largest flag football league in Texas with around 75 teams. No since in reinventing the best wheel ever made when the wheel can simply add another set of spokes to make it even stronger.

San Antonio Flag Football Association (now in its 20th year) is presently playing 5 days a week with both competitive and recreational men's divisions. Its regular seasons are held from September thru November and also March thru May. Mini seasons are held in January and June. SAFFA also hosts two statewide tournaments always held the weekend before Thanksgiving and on Memorial weekend. San Antonio also is home to some of the best teams in Texas the SA Outlaws ,SA Mustangs, and SA Bandits.( check State rankings on the website http://texasflagfootball.com/ ).

SAFFA's women's non contact flag football league will hold it's first ever player tryouts in August with the flag football season to follow starting in September. It will be open to all women ages 18 years of age and older. The tryout August 10 is at Olmos Football Field at the corner of Basse & McCullough. The games will be held at Olmos Basin Park on Devine Rd.

Flag Football also adds a level of credibility to women's professional football here in San Antonio. One of the medias knocks against women's pro football across the nation has been the lack of a feeder system to supply the best players up to the professional football team. Offensive and defensive role players wanting to play for the pro team will now be able to hone their skills, showcase their talents to coaches and build team relationships with many of the women already having made the pro team and new players destined to be part of the Alamo City Battle women's professional football team. The Houston Energy has players that participate in flag football during the off season and back to back championships in the WPFL (Women's Professional Football League) seems to prove the value of that participation. Flag Football isn't the end all piece of the puzzle for San Antonio and the Alamo City Battle but it is a corner piece that will now be in place as the Alamo City Battle continues growing its marketplace using grassroots style "roll up your sleeves and get to work" activities.

As the Flag Football league kicks into gear, Rugby will be the next focus of attention for the Alamo City Battle as we seek to develop an off season player participation activity sport for women wanting to be part of the offensive and defensive line with the pro team. There are a couple of women's Rugby teams in San Antonio now but our goal here is to develop an entire league of women's Rugby teams in San Antonio which will benefit the players by not having to travel out of town to play their games as they compete locally for the league championship.
