Coaching women's professional football in the WPFL is a door swinging wide open that Stephanie Takas Mercer has been constantly knocking on with her sports play, study, preparation and coaching all along the way.

Head Coach/ Stephanie Takas-Mercer

Stephanie Takas-Mercer

2002-
Head coach of the Alamo City Battle

Back in her school days as a student playing girl's powder puff football, coach Mercer's dad was asked by the high school football coach if she would consider playing on the boy's football team. Her dad replied by saying "don't ask her unless you are going to let her play." Since then Stephanie Takas-Mercer has been plowing straight ahead, knocking down barriers that stood in her way and not looking back. Coach Mercer loves football as well as women's sports and comes to the Alamo City Battle with a good size resume of coaching both women's and men's 5A sports here in Texas as well as playing football in flag football leagues.

Coaching History:  A native of San Antonio, coach Stephanie Takas-Mercer attended Theodore Roosevelt High School. After Roosevelt she went to play college basketball for four years at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. While at Southwestern, she played on many intramural flag football teams.

Upon graduating from Southwestern in 1994, Stephanie began her coaching career at Eisenhower Middle School. Soon after coaching at the junior high, Coach Mercer moved to Lubbock where she coached volleyball, boy's basketball and track at Lubbock High. Also in Lubbock she actively participated in flag football at Texas Tech.

After returning to San Antonio, Coach Mercer coached basketball and softball at Tom C. Clark High School.

Currently Coach Mercer is the Head Women's Basketball coach at Providence High School where she has led the team in back to back state tournament appearances in the two years she has been there.

Coach Stephanie Takas-Mercer joins the Alamo City Battle as head coach with the unanimous approval of all the principals involved in bringing the WPFL into the San Antonio area with the Alamo City Battle team. Stephanie came highly rated by other coaches in and around the San Antonio area. Her coaching skills and abilities are very impressive. Her knowledge of football is quite extensive as is her desire to coach football. We are very delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to coach Mercer on behalf of the football fans in and around San Antonio and South Central Texas and are equally excited to have Stephanie Takas-Mercer guiding the Alamo City Battle into its first season.
